Time to weld up the e36. The rust isnt all too bad for a 20 year old car that lived its life near the coast. (The primer will be getting cleaned off, i did some of the cutting last week and needed to protect it in the mean time.)

Is there any rust around the filler cap?.

I haven’t noticed that E36s have so weird sills. But it should be quite easy to fix with a decent MIG welder. Is the right side better?
One week ago I got nearly free ‘96 Laguna with some rust damage in the left sill. I decided fix it with my workplace’s pulse MIG instead of the regular that I have using at my car club. That was a really bad idea. I did the most horrible weld job that I have made in years.

I have a pretty cheap MIG so the welds arent at all pretty but they are strong. Since its only the underneath portion of the sill im not too worried about it.

Strong is better than pretty in those places.

That’s always a good sign. Some E36s I see have rust around the filler cap.

Coming along nicely! It’s a good idea to stick some weld-through primer on both sides of the metal prior to welding in patches. A lot of people weld a patch in, paint the outside then wonder why it rusts through again (bare metal on the inside).
Waxoyl would be a good addition as well, provided you don't need to do any more welding to that area!

I sprayed primer up through and theres actually a small opening at the front i can use to put a spray nozzle in to coat it. Even weld through primer just seems to burn off for me and ends up being not all that useful.

Yeah seems to have been looked after. This rust was hidden under the front panels so hard to blame the PO for not catching it.
